Guarana, a Potent Antioxidant

GuaranaGreen Tea has long been touted for its health benefits, especially as an antioxidant due to the high level of catechins it contains. Now, researchers at University of São Paulo’s Public Health School in Brazil have discovered that the seeds of a tropical shrub, guarana, contains more than ten times the amount of catechins as green tea. In Brazil guarana is found in several popular fizzy drinks.

In their clinical trial they found that “guarana is a rich source of catechins, which, when properly absorbed, reduce the oxidative stress associated with the development of neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders, as well as diabetes, cancer, inflammation and premature aging due to cell death, among other conditions harmful to health and wellbeing.”

One of the great challenges in taking guarana is that it is also high in caffeine, making it a stimulant. Nevertheless, there are many benefits for heart and brain health from this plant, largely unknown outside of Brazil.
