Omega-3 Fatty Acids Help Clear Brain Waste
Omega-3 fatty acids, common in certain fish, have been shown to have a number of benefits, especially for cardiovascular and brain health. Regarding the latter, a study published in The FASEB Journal revealed that in mice “omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids promote amyloid-β clearance from the brain through mediating the function of the glymphatic system.” In short, that means these essential fatty acids facilitate the clearance of waste from the brain. One of these removed metabolites is known as a culprit in Alzheimer’s disease. This mechanism may also have a beneficial role in other neurological diseases as well, such as traumatic brain injury, and sleep impairment.
This needs to be confirmed by human studies, but it does reinforce the importance of including fatty fish into your diet, especially as you age.
