The Health Benefits of Nuts
Increasingly we are hearing of the value of eating nuts. A recent meta analysis of 29 studies, published in the journal BMC Medicine, found that “higher nut intake is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, total cancer and all-cause mortality, and mortality from respiratory disease, diabetes, and infections.” There are many reasons for this, including the polyunsaturated fats, fiber, magnesium, and even antioxidants found in many nuts. Unfortunately, however, because of their high calorie content, many people have beer leery of consuming nuts; however, it does not take many to obtain the positive health benefits. As little as 20g per day, about a handful, is all it takes. And, for those concerned about their weight, there is some evidence that at those quantities the risk of obesity could be reduced. So, for your heart, and overall health, keep a bowlful of nuts handy for a quick, healthy snack!
