Vitamin D Deficiency May Increase Headaches

Here’s another reason to consider your vitamin D levels. A recent study from Finland, published in Scientific Reports, discovered that low blood levels of vitamin D may increase the risk of chronic headaches. The research was conducted on middle-aged and older men in Finland, a northern country where lowers levels of UVB radiation from the sun results in the body’s decreased ability to produce vitamin D. The authors recommended that a further study take place to examine the role of supplementation in offsetting these headaches. Considering the winter we have had in Yakima, this is a good reminder that we are in a northern region far from the equator, and that especially at this time of year it may be very difficult to obtain the vitamin D we need without supplementation.
