Vitamin D Protects Against Colds and Flus

Chalk up another one for vitamin D! In recent years, this previously inconspicuous vitamin has been getting lots of attention as countless studies have been discovering its important role in a wide range of health functions. Some of this research has focused on vitamin D’s impact on the immune system, and now a meta-analysis of 25 of these studies, published in The BMJ, has confirmed that vitamin D supplementation protects “against acute respiratory tract infection.” There is still a lot to discover, such as what quantities are most effective, but some things are already clear. For example, those with blood levels below 10 mg/dl could especially benefit from supplementation. All of this might help explain why people are vulnerable to colds and flus in the winter months when their vitamin D levels are naturally lower due to exposure to less sunlight.
