Statins Pose Diabetes Risk for Older Women

One of the blockbuster pharmaceutical products is statins, a class of drugs that lower cholesterol. This obviously addresses an important health issue, but there are downsides to these drugs as well. One example of the negative effects comes from a recent study from the University of Queensland in Australia, published in Drugs & Aging. They discovered that older women taking statins face a significantly increased risk of developing diabetes, with a greater risk as the dosage increased. They recommended that “elderly women currently taking statins should be carefully and regularly monitored for increased blood glucose to ensure early detection and appropriate management of this potential adverse effect, including consideration of de-prescribing.”
