B Vitamins Minimize the Effects of Air Pollution

Even within a contaminated environment there are ways to reduce health risks. New research from Columbia University, and published in the journal Scientific Reports, showed that healthy non-smokers who took vitamin B supplements nearly reversed any negative effects of fine particle pollution on their cardiovascular and immune systems. The effects were reduced on heart rate by 150 percent, total white blood count by 139 percent, and lymphocyte count by 106 percent. The study was conducted in lightly polluted areas, and not with adults in excessive air pollution found in many large urban areas.
