Lutein and Zeaxanthin Protect from High Screen Exposure
Technology has put has in front of all kinds of screens: TV’s, monitors, smartphones, etc. There is growing concern that this screen fixation, especially because of the high energy blue light that is emitted, could be harmful to our eyes. Researchers from the University of Georgia, however, have discovered that the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin may protect from such prolonged exposure. The results, published in the journal Foods, was based on a double-blind test using supplements, and showed that these natural pigments contributed to “significant improvement in MPOD [macular pigment ocular density], overall sleep quality, headache frequency, eye strain, eye fatigue, and all visual performance measures.”
