Organic Onions are Better for You
The popularity of organic foods has grown in recent years as people seek foods that are grown without pesticides and other chemicals. The unresolved question, is whether, apart from the chemicals, organic foods are more nutritious. Some research has shown this to be the case. A new study, published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, attempted to address this question by examining onions over a six year period. The results show that flavonoid (such as quercetin) levels and antioxidant activity in organic onions are higher than in conventional onions. The length of the study was able to eliminate weather factors that might influence the results on shorter studies. So, with these results we have another reason to shop in the organic sections of our supermarkets.
