Can Coffee Help Prevent Diabetes?

We have seen a number of health benefits related to coffee, and here’s another: Research published in the Journal of Natural Products discovered in mice “the reduced risk of developing T2D [type 2 diabetes] in coffee consumers.” Of particular interest is the fact that it is not caffeine that brings these results, but another compound called cafestol. In the study, insulin secretion in pancreatic cells increased when they were exposed to glucose, and glucose uptake in muscle cells also increased. Of course, more research needs to be done, including on human subjects, but it does provide another reason for enjoying moderate coffee consumption!
