Stevia Can Help Treat Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome, a precursor to cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes, is a growing problem, leading many people trying to figure out how to deal with sugars and other carbohydrates in their diets. Increasingly, artificial sweeteners are proving to bring more problems than they are worth, but stevia is being explored as a better alternative. Extracts from the stevia rebaudiana plant form a calorie-free sweetener that is not only natural, but may have other benefits as well. A new study, published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, examined the role of stevia in obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and elevated blood lipids, and discovered that compounds from stevia “can serve as a natural and alternative treatment for diseases that are associated with metabolic syndrome, thus contributing to health promotion.”
