Plant proteins better for heart health

Animal proteins have got a bad rap, and research shows how switching to plant-based proteins is better for cardiovascular health. A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association looked at the effects of substituting one or two servings of animal proteins with plant proteins. The researchers discovered that such a move could reduce the main cholesterol markers by close to 5 percent. While seemingly a small change, study authors conclude that this shows “that plant protein as part of a comprehensive lipid‐lowering dietary pattern alone or as an add‐on to other lipid‐lowering therapy can help people achieve their lipid targets and reduce CVD risk.”
